what is Off the Page?
Off the Page is the curatorial project under Unwoven. It fosters community among artists and writers while broadening the public’s understanding of literature. We believe the typical introduction to writing neglects the diversity of contemporary authors and poets. We offer a reintroduction to literature in an approachable and creative manner. Our aim is to engage audiences who have been ostracized by the content and form from the literary canon. All art forms should be a microphone to amplify social change. Our curatorial vision celebrates, mourns alongside, and envisions the future with new and established writers and artists to foster healing and facilitate change.
Off the Page prioritizes participants who identify primarily as LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and those living with disabilities. We believe in dismantling hierarchy by inviting writers, artists, and editors to take active roles in the decision making process. Our time and resources are used to ensure all collaborators see the vision for their unique contribution come to life.
what does off the page do?
process
Each issue is inspired by a guiding story, essay, or poem written by a contemporary writer. Contributors accepted to the magazine will be inspired by the craft, form, or topic of the guiding piece. Our team of readers and editors then select submitted work over the course of the first few months of the project.
collaboration
The co-curators pair writers with multimedia artists. These pairs meet regularly to foster a space for discussion about how their creative forms converge and differ. Together, these pairs create exciting art installations.
exhibition
The artworks and written work are exhibited in partnership with a gallery. The exhibition's programming includes a reading as part of the opening night, workshops, artist talks, a reading, and other community events.
